About

Who We Are

Better Health Initiative (BHI) is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) tax exempt charitable professional health organization of young healthcare advocates, health workers, health leaders, and allied-health students of diverse background who continually make selfless sacrifices in the pursuit to improve the health of individuals in their communities and around the world regardless of boundaries. Members dedicate a significant amount of their time volunteering as health advocates and community organizers in inner city hospitals, shelters/public kitchens, geriatric homes, foster homes, churches, orphanages and public healthcare centers, and travel on health awareness missions around the globe. BHI organizes health-fairs/outreach programs, seminars and symposiums nationally and internationally to educate the global community on approaches, techniques and technology that can prevent diseases and ailments that are preventable and create awareness on the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices as it is the hallmark of an optimal health.
Our emphasis is on the less privileged, economically disadvantaged and medically underserved areas around the globe. Quality health education and care have by default been deprived of these individuals who constantly exhibit need for a decent healthcare system. The rural communities in Africa for example, have been hardest hit by every pandemic in existence. Millions of lives (especially children and women and older adults) have been lost carelessly in the continent of Africa from preventable and curable diseases. BHI is working relentlessly to stand in the gap of these inequalities and disparities. Our efforts largely have curbed the prevalence of most preventable diseases like child obesity, hypertension, malaria, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, cancer, STDs, brain injuries, and heart diseases; and have inspired many to get on a track to a healthier self.
We pride ourselves in the dedicated quest for promoting quality healthy living around the globe. To this course we commit ourselves totally to.

Scope

What We Do

Health Fairs

BHI conduct frequent educational and interactive events designed to create awareness and provide preventive medicine and medical screening to people in rural and medically underserved communities. Our team of healthcare leaders assess individuals’ blood pressure and blood glucose levels. This is a very important step to rule-out or detect any pre-hypertensive and pre-diabetic conditions. Based on a holistic approach, BHI also check individuals’ height and weight to determine their Body Mass Index (BMI), a necessary step to highlight any risk for obesity thereby preventing any form of heart-attack and/or stroke. Our team of experts conduct dental workshops to emphasize the need for consistent dental care. This prevents gum diseases and dental decay thereby improving overall health. Awareness on the prevention of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are emphasized.

Our research and evidence-based approach significantly curbs the prevalence of preventable diseases.

Child Obesity Prevention
BHI work closely with families of children with special health care needs to access needed services by educating parents/caregivers on nutritional/lifestyle choices that prevents health problems especially child obesity. Obesity and a myriad of preventable diseases can be minimized and/or prevented in children with changes in diet and lifestyles.
Information on foods high in therapeutic nutrients is usually shared. Emphasis is laid on the need for regular exercise and increase in physical activities as a prelude to optimal health.
Health Symposiums/Seminars
BHI work with physicians, pharmacists, dentists, nurses, social workers, community organizers, and other public health workers and entities to provide teachings through seminars. We utilize the latest technologies and most current information available.
We often lead information sessions for the members of the public on new health technologies, techniques and approaches. Our database of research allows us to convey new techniques and updated health/wellness information and evidence-based knowledge to individuals in these underserved communities.
BHI apply state-of-the art technology, literature materials and other visual aids during the presentations and seminars that engender the understanding of disease processes and ways to prevent their prognosis. We initiate interactive sessions that foster understanding amongst our audience.
The theme of our symposium is consistently centered on wellness, disease prevention, health promotion and health maintenance.
Mentorship/Tutorials
BHI organize tutorial sessions and mentorship programs for beginning allied-health students. We are equipped with individuals with varied professional health backgrounds who coach and mentor students not just on the course-work materials, but on the need to be accountable, responsible, competent and disciplined professionals.
As nurses are the ones in the front-line of healthcare, they understand first-hand how family interaction impact patient healing and teachings. This is effectively achieved by having culturally competent nurses. BHI emphasize the importance of cultural competency and its correlation to effective patient outcome.
BHI also conducts tutorial sessions for beginning nursing students, equipping them with the basic nursing foundational knowledge. These new students are coached to master the art of developing effective care-plans, as it is the model of the nursing process. As a result of these extra-tutorials, these students excel in their studies and turn out to become competent professional nurses and leaders.
Scholarships
BHI offer numerous tuition assistance programs to students in rural Africa who demonstrate impeccable scholarly proficiency in health-related courses. These scholarships are focused on students that desire to pursue careers in health-care related fields as it will aid them in realizing their potentials as professional health-care workers and leaders. As nurses are the ones in the front-line of healthcare, they understand first-hand how family interaction impact patient healing and teachings. Homeless Outreach
Healthy nutrition is the hallmark of an optimal health. Therefore, BHI members regularly volunteer at various inner cities’ public kitchens and mobile meal programs to help cook, serve, and distribute dinner to the homeless population.
BHI distributes warm clothes, gloves, head warmers/hats, socks, and toiletries to homeless individuals in inner cities’ homeless shelters to keep the folks warm and healthy during the cold seasons. This prevents them from acquiring any cold-related ailments like frostbites, pneumonia, and hypothermia.

Hello

A Note from the Founder

The increased desire to promote healthy living in communities where preventable and curable diseases plagues its inhabitants challenged me to mobilize an army of young healthcare leaders, healthcare professionals, healthcare advocates, and allied-health students to embark on a mission that will not only encourage and support healthy living amongst the mass population, but will most importantly salvage the lives of vulnerable children and women and older adults. Every individual deserves the right to live in an environmentally safe and healthy neighborhood, equipped with the convenient access to decent medical care. They deserve access to information on the right and healthy nutritional regimen and overall healthy lifestyle.

Child obesity is on the rise around the world, and the only first and most important antidote to this “nightmare” is healthy eating. Overcoming obesity not only reduces body weight but also improves overall health by promoting better breathing, circulation, mobility, and reduces risks of sleep disorders, heart diseases/attacks, diabetes, stroke, and cancer. BHI is equipped with talented individuals with compounded knowledge on nutrition therapy.

HIV/AIDS is on the rise. Awareness on the prevention of this pandemic is very important to promoting a healthy lifestyle, and we commit ourselves to its campaign.
Very importantly, our state of mind determines to a large extent our productivity level. A sound and healthy mind is like a ‘rolling stone.’ Therefore, we emphasize the importance of maintaining a stable psychological health through a rich balance of social and spiritual practices.

Most of our efforts are directed towards providing preventive measures against child obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases, HIV/AIDS, and STDs, malaria, cancer and mental illness through educational symposiums and health-fairs.

Our greatest asset lies in our undying passion to volunteer as health crusaders for the prevention of preventable diseases.
Better health, one community at a time!

History

How We Started

BHI was founded in 2004 and later incorporated in November 2016 in the state of Maryland, U.S.A. with a preventative goal: to save lives of millions of people (particularly those living in rural economically disadvantaged and medically underserved communities) by promoting optimal health through health-fairs, educational seminars and workshops that emphasize disease prevention, health maintenance and wellness.

Hope in Every Bag

On December 23, 2023, BHI volunteers brought warmth and joy to the streets of Southeast Washington, DC. Our dedicated team distributed gift bags to the homeless, filled with essentials and a touch of holiday cheer. Each bag was more than just items; it was a gesture of compassion and solidarity. This initiative embodies our mission to uplift and support the most vulnerable in our communities. Watch the video to see how a small act of kindness can make a significant impact. Together, we can spread hope and make a difference, one person at a time.
